The Importance of Getting Involved

People are feeling disconnected from their communities. Despite consistent voter turnout, people are feeling “burnt out” by the current political landscape. We can change this. There are many opportunities to get involved in federal, state, and local politics; you just need the desire to make a change. Here are a few ways that you can get involved today!

Get Involved Locally

If you want to make an impact in your daily life and in the lives of your community members, it is important to be locally engaged.

  • Connect with your Democratic Town Committee. If you are reading this blog, you have likely found the North Branford Democratic Town Committee, but each town has a town committee that looks to foster engagement and connection. Simply attend a meeting or utilize the contact form to find a way to connect with others who support civic engagement.

  • Consider a Town Board or Commission. Numerous boards and commissions are always looking for people to get involved. These boards and commissions make decisions that affect your everyday life, and you can be a part of the discussion. Contact your local DTC to find out what positions may be available.

  • Run for an Elected Position. You are the best person to represent the vision that you have for your community, and you are not alone! Your local DTC is here to support you as you take the steps in running for office. Most elected positions aren’t full-time jobs and are a great way to make lasting change in your community.

Volunteer for Campaigns and Election Day Assistance

Grassroot efforts are the lifeblood of political success. Let your community know what is important to you through connection, engagement, and mobilization.

  • Knock on Doors. Meet your neighbors and find out what is important to them. Many people don’t feel heard by their politicians but we can give them a voice. Sign up with your local DTC to find out when the next canvassing event is happening.

  • Make Phone Calls. Calling voters is an easy way to quickly connect with people and get the word out on what is happening in the community. Contact your local DTC to find out when their next phone banking event is happening.

  • Help with Voting Efforts. Towns are always looking for volunteers to help with voter registration and voting assistance/monitoring. You can sign up through the state to volunteer or each out to your town hall or local voting registrar to see how you can ensure that every vote is counted.

Advocate for Issues

Focusing on issues that are important to you and your community helps others stay informed and drives engagement.

  • Join a caucus. Caucuses bring together people around shared interests and give you support to advocate for the issues most important to you. Caucuses give you a chance to meet regularly with people fighting for the same goals and offer opportunities to hear from experts in the field. Find a caucus to join here.

  • Support Organizations that Advocate on Issues. Whether it is voting rights, equality, environmental protection, or other critical issues, find an organization that is focused on fighting for what you believe.

There are endless ways to get involved and ensure that your voice is heard. Let us support you in taking the next steps toward being a civically engaged constituent!
